The
greatest non-oil export Nigeria has today is its intellectual capital.
But over the past twenty years, most of our brightest, strongest
and most entrepreneurial resources have begged, stolen and brokered
their way out of the country to the developed world, where they
have taken roots, flourished and spread their fauna to the admiration
of their host countries.
There is hardly any developed economy in the world today has not
benefited from the professional competence of Nigerians in academics,
medicine, pure sciences, engineering, marketing, and information
technology.
The
presidential initiative on the development of the Nigerian software
industry is born out of the realization that the nation has abundant
intellectual capital whose genius and creativity in software development
could help jump-start Nigeria’s participation in the booming global
software industry.
This led to the establishment of the Nigeria Software Development
Initiative (NSDI).
NSDI is a presidential initiative but driven by the private sector,
with membership drawn from a cross-section of all the major players
in the Nigerian software industry, and all with a common goal –
to put Nigeria’s name in the global map of the highest earners of
foreign exchange in software exports, by the year 2007.
